Need transport to get around Cape Town? Debating Car Hire?

There are several (some quite creative) ways of getting around Cape Town. We've compliled a little list of our favourites, based on accessability and convenience. Then there are the more unusual options, like the informal Taxi (avoid after dark), the Rikki, and Scooter Hires. And don't be surprised if you see a London Cab or two floating around... In the Rainbow Nation, anything goes!

Airport Transfers

Many hotels and guest houses have their own airport transfers but if you are travelling independently, here is a list of companies to call who will transport you from the airport to your hotel and visa versa. Most of them also offer day trips around the Cape Peninsular.

The Rikki's

Instead of running a meter (leaving you helpless for your driver who is no doubt going to take you on a reasonable lengthy route home), the Rikkis offer a set price list. From location to location, they will take you pretty much anywhere in and around the Cape Peninsula. To add to this they have an incredible presence on the streets with multiple branded cabs that you just can't hide from. Visit their website for more information - http://www.rikkis.co.za/.

Car Hire

Cape Town has all the "usual suspects" when it comes to car hire. All of these companies have offices at Cape Town International Airport, but it is a good idea to book in advance.

In addition to the above, Cape Town also has lots of independent car hire operators to help you get around. These will in most cases be cheaper than the bigger companies. We're in the process of compiling a little list, but the best way to find a deal is to keep your eyes peeled for any vehical with a "Rent Me" sign on the back and a number.

Safety

It's always advisable to stay alert when travelling in a foreign city - tourists are often easy targets so be careful with your possessions particularly cameras, jewellery and cash. As a woman, it's advisable to travel in a group - more importantly at night - and don't walk in remote areas after dark. Minibus taxis are safe during the day, but are best avoided at night unless you're in a big group and are only traveling a short distance.
